Creative ways to teach English vocabulary I woul like to say me and my friend shermy wrote this as a collobartive article for my journal.  We can use Vocabulary Games such as Bingo, charades, pictionary or memory match to teach new words. Creating a word wall is another method. The teacher can create a colorful wall with words grouped by theme or part of speech. Ex :weather, days. Give the students a set of new words and ask them to create a story using them. The teacher builds a vocabulary jar and then picks a word from the jar and discusses its meaning, usage and form. Picture Word matching is another activity where vocabulary words are matched with pictures. The picture clues are given in a paragraph and words are given in brackets. Students have to match the picture with the correct vocabulary. Role-play and drama, act-outs, debates help to new vocabulary in a real-life context. Children use the new vocabulary in speaking. The dictionaries aid to improve the vocabulary. ...

Teaching English through songs and rhymes.  Songs and rhymes are one of the most enjoyable and effective methods, especially for young learners. Songs help to make the learning environment fun, relaxed, and engaging. Students are actively participating in singing and doing actions related to it.  Rhymes help children to develop their pronunciation, rhythm, and intonation naturally. Repetition in songs helps them to reinforce vocabulary and sentence structures without the need for memorization. For example, using simple action songs like “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” teaches body parts and verbs. Songs like Old Macdonald had a farm teach about colours and animals. Rhymes like “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” improve listening and speaking skills. Songs also help learners to gain confidence in using the language well. Some students may not be confident enough to speak in front of the classroom, but they may enjoy singing with other students. In my classroom, I use audio...

My first teaching practice what I learned

Image
My First Teaching Practice – What I Learned.  I can remember my first teaching practice experience at Sumangala Boys' College, Pandaura, for a two-week block teaching session. In their I learned many things and those things helped me to improve as a teacher. First thing was planning a lesson and methodology lectures helped me a lot with that. I selected the lessons to teach, then prepared the learning outcomes to suit the competency level. At first, I didn't write the lesson plan in the book and drew a sketch on paper. Then I corrected it through peers and our lecture. I planned and designed activities for each stage of the lesson and allocated time for each stage.– I understood that planning lessons with clear objectives and time management is essential. I got to know that more time must be allocated for practising their learning.   I learned classroom management and realised how important it is to maintain discipline while keeping a friendly atmosphere. Questioni...

Why Reading Should Be a Daily Habit for Teachers.  This was a post written by Piyumi Rajapaksaha, my college friend. She is working as an English teacher.  Reading is not only a hobby, but it is also an important  tool for teachers. Reading is a transformative habit that shapes knowledge, skills and values. As educators and teachers, we shape the minds of future generations, and to fulfill that task effectively, we must always be learning and growing on our own. For our self-improvement and to explore knowledge, reading is important.  We can become an expert in that field by reading subject matter related to it. We can be sure about our subject matter, clarify the questions and find solutions to the problems. As a teacher, we have to be updated about the daily events, current situations in the country, and notices related to the school setting. In addition to communicating with the administration and parents, reading is important to gain information related to...

Lessons planning

How I Prepare My English Lesson Plans As I believe planning is the foundation of effective teaching. So it is essential to plan a lesson. As an English language teacher, I believe that a well-structured lesson plan is essential to guide my students and myself throughout the learning process. Each time I prepare a lesson, I start by identifying the competency and competency level related to my lesson and I decide my learning objectives relating to it. What I expect my students to achieve at the end of the lesson . These objectives are based on the syllabus and the specific needs and language levels of my learners. I include my learning outcomes for all the three domains named as cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domain. The affective domain is also very important because, through learning, we don't only produce a knowledgeable person but a moral citizen with sympathy and empathy. For example, if my competency level is reading and extracts specific information, my learning outc...

The visual aids

The Visual Aids I Use in English Language Classrooms and the benefits of them in English language learning.  Visual aids play a powerful role in making English lessons more effective and engaging. Visual aids make lessons more fun and meaningful. Visual aids are all tools, including images, photographs, drawings, pictograms, videos, etc., that are used to facilitate the presentation of information and aid in the understanding of knowledge. In summary, they are all the tools that help to transform verbal or written information into visual information. In my classroom, I use flashcards to teach vocabulary, especially for my primary class learners, such as grades 3 and 4. I use pictures, posters and charts to support grammar and storytelling. Real objects (realia) help to make learning more practical. It can be easily found and it is very familiar to students. I also use videos, PowerPoint slides, and posters for listening and speaking activities. I show them the images, songs...

The importance of pronunciation in English language classrooms.

Image
Pronunciation plays a major role in English language classrooms as it directly affect for communication and for teaching the English language effectively. Pronunciation is a part of speech, and it is a physical activity. In order to pronounce a new language, we need to re - train the muscles we use to speak and practice. As an English teacher my idea is that we must practice accurate pronunciation for our students from the beginning stages. Now let's see why we want to teach them pronunciation in our classroom. The objectives of teaching pronunciation include students will be able to learn patterns, rhythm, and articulation of sounds , word stress in order to develop communicative competence. Furthermore to help the students for the academic improvement   and to instill students with intrinsic motivation to learn.  It help them in loud reading, speaking and daily communication. Clear pronunciation helps to convey the idea of an individual easily and as well as to und...
