The visual aids

The Visual Aids I Use in English Language Classrooms and the benefits of them in English language learning.

Visual aids play a powerful role in making English lessons more effective and engaging. Visual aids make lessons more fun and meaningful. Visual aids are all tools, including images, photographs, drawings, pictograms, videos, etc., that are used to facilitate the presentation of information and aid in the understanding of knowledge. In summary, they are all the tools that help to transform verbal or written information into visual information.

In my classroom, I use flashcards to teach vocabulary, especially for my primary class learners, such as grades 3 and 4. I use pictures, posters and charts to support grammar and storytelling. Real objects (realia) help to make learning more practical. It can be easily found and it is very familiar to students. I also use videos, PowerPoint slides, and posters for listening and speaking activities. I show them the images, songs with visuals by using digital tools. I have pictures drawn for different vocabulary:shirt, trousers, sweater. Furthermore, I use a flip chart and a slot board, which our lecturer guided us to prepare. These aids help students to understand the meanings of words quickly, retain words better, and actively participate in class. There are different types of learners and some are visual learners. So visual aids are needed to support those types of learners. Especially for young or beginner learners, visual aids make lessons more fun, engaging and meaningful.

Visual aids are used in all aspects of our lives and are often universal. For example, traffic signs, symbols on clothing labels, and icons on television controls. So it is better to have an understanding of visual aids for school children. I can remember that there is a lesson for grade 05 students about traffic signals. For children, they are a great source when it comes to communicating, especially for the little ones who have not yet developed speech or for those who have language difficulties.

Visual learning is faster. It has been proven that the human brain is visual. According to Dr Ana García-Abad, “90% of the information processed by the brain is visual. Hence, we can remember 80% of images, and only 20% of texts, or 10% of sounds. In addition, our brain processes images 60,000 times faster than text. So visual aids are important in English language classrooms.

Images cause a greater interest in the students. They observe the colour and shape of it, and give the answers to the questions raised by the teacher after using a visual aid. This visual aid can be used at the beginning of the lesson and at the end too. It helps to break the monotony of the lesson as the lecture method is boring without visuals. Rather than just telling something visual helps the learners to grasp the ideas accurately. So I always try to use visual aids for my lessons whenever possible.
