How group work help in English language learning..
I am going to discuss the benefits of group work in my English language lessons through my experiences.
Here I will pay my attention to
1What is group work?
2Advantages of group work in English language learning.
3Role of the teachers in group work .
4 Possible group activity ideas.
During my college days as a novice teacher, I have been teaching the students in my block teaching phases and internship period, and now I am an English teacher who is currently working in a school. In their I discovered that group work is one of the most productive teaching strategies used in English language classrooms. It helps the students for active participation, sharing knowledge and work, builds confidence and develops essential communication skills among students. As a Bed follower and school teacher I have seen the positive impact of group activities in both primary and secondary classes. Group work refers to a teaching method that involves students working together in small groups to accomplish a shared task or achieve a common goal. Now I am going to discuss the plus points of it. It helps them to develop communication skills. They communicate with each other and group work supports students to use English naturally while discussing, planning, or presenting tasks. They discuss the questions, gather information, share their work and talk with each other. Furthermore, their confidence and leadership skills are developed. Some students are shy to speak in front whole class, as they are not confident enough, but they feel more comfortable expressing themselves in small groups. It encourages speaking and listening in a supportive environment. In addition to that, it encourages peer learning, which is a positive thing in the teaching learning process. The students who are capable of sharing a greater knowledge help their peers, and everyone learns from each other. This promotes teamwork and a shared learning experience. It helps with critical thinking. Working together to solve a problem, write a story, or analyse a poem allows students to think in modern ways, and they react to different viewpoints and develop better ideas collaboratively as a group. It makes learning enjoyable. Group activities like role plays, games, and project work make English lessons more fun and engaging. For example "Aunt Minoli's kitchen" role play given in the grade six textbook the students divided the characters and presented it very well with great enthusiasm. There are plenty of examples of this type of group work in my classroom. It helps to improve fluency whereas lower pressure in small groups helps hesitant speakers to raise their voice, leading to greater fluency. On the other hand it helps them to build up their own personality. It enhances social skills because students learn to share ideas, solve conflicts, and appreciate various viewpoints. Some positive effects are immediate feedback from teachers and peers, exposure to various perspectives, a sense of community, and learning in a group with participants. It features real life scenarios such as in a fair, house in dialogues. Children take turns, share work, respect others ideas, stay together. As teachers, we must use group work wisely, by ensuring equal participation and clear instructions. A proper plan for group work can transform the classroom into an interactive and learner-centred space. Teachers can observe groups more closely and provide more focused help and create a more positive atmosphere. For effective group work set clear goals, ensure equal participation, accountability and assign relevant, meaningful tasks.
Things to be considered in group work
We have to consider how students will be physically arranged in groups, set clear guidelines, talk to students about their past experiences with group work, identify the instructional objectives, make the task challenging, assign group tasks that encourage involvement, fair division of work and allow sufficient time for group work. Include an icebreaker for longer period of group work, establish how group members should interact with one another, including principles such as respect, active listening, and methods for decision making. Give the students to ask questions to clarify doubts even though the teacher has given the instructions. Jaques, 2000 has said that "your absence can increase students willingness to share uncertainties and disagreements. So it's better to observe them without disturbing them. Even in our Bed classrooms we follow the group work.. We discuss the questions, then divide the parts and find information related to them, and then share it with peers and present it orally or as a written piece. From this group work, I have also learned that we can learn different things from other groups and can gain a lot of knowledge. Negative factors such as conflicts, unequal participation, and avoiding the task may occur in certain situations, and the teacher must take necessary actions to avoid them. It is good to mix up activities with a combination of group work, pair work and individual tasks, as it reflects real life and prepares the students for a working environment where they will have to work individually as well as in teams. Possible group activity ideas are debates, creating a story, role play a dialogue, act out, solving language related puzzles, riddles, reporting on current events, news reading etc.
In my point of view, I would like to say that group work will help a lot in English language teaching. I have found it very effective during my teaching learning process.
