The importance of pronunciation in English language classrooms.

Pronunciation plays a major role in English language classrooms as it directly affect for communication and for teaching the English language effectively. Pronunciation is a part of speech, and it is a physical activity. In order to pronounce a new language, we need to re - train the muscles we use to speak and practice. As an English teacher my idea is that we must practice accurate pronunciation for our students from the beginning stages. Now let's see why we want to teach them pronunciation in our classroom. The objectives of teaching pronunciation include students will be able to learn patterns, rhythm, and articulation of sounds , word stress in order to develop communicative competence. Furthermore to help the students for the academic improvement   and to instill students with intrinsic motivation to learn.

It help them in loud reading, speaking and daily communication. Clear pronunciation helps to convey the idea of an individual easily and as well as to understand others ideas easily. Poor pronunciation may lead to misunderstanding even though grammar and vocabulary are correct. It helps in clarity and comprehension where as correct sounds, stress and intonation make speech intelligible, and avoiding misinterpretation. Ex:see vs sea. Clear pronunciation make speakers more confident, competent, fluent, authoritative by showing their first impression in any setting. They can speak fluently without pausing and murmuring. It relates to overall skill development where as if a person cannot pronounce a word he/she struggle to pronounce it and use it, which effect in all the four language skills. On the other hand it develops listening and response skills of the learners. It guides the students for academic and professional success by ensuring active participation in lectures, discussions, debates, interviews, conversations and presentations which lead  to better learning and professional success one day. Especially for job interviews in the future, employers may value candidates with strong pronunciation skills as they can communicate effectively with others in a group. It helps for better cultural understanding because learners not only improve their language skills but also demonstrate cultural sensitivity and appreciation for the language 's cultural context. Now if I talk about the importance of pronunciation in ESL class rooms it is essential and our curriculum and syllabus has given an important place to it. My grade 03 students pronounce the letters of the alphabet and words related to the sound of the letters. For example A-apple, axe, ant, arrow, anthurium. Etc. The vocabulary is highlighted in a cloud to improve pronunciation and use them meaningfully in a context. For the improvement of pronunciation skills, learners can use various resources such as practicing vowel and consonant sounds, listening to native speakers. Ex :film, songs, news reading. The pronunciation must be improved when they learn language and go to higher grades.

Next I am going to include a short and simple poem on the importance of pronunciation in English language learning.

Speak It Right

Words may be plenty, thoughts may be clear,

But without good sounds, can others hear?

A mispronounced word may cause some confusion,

Turning your message into an illusion.

Pronounce it right, and say it slow,

Let your confidence and meaning flow.

From “ship” to “sheep,” from “bat” to “bet,”

One small sound can change what you get.

So listen and learn, practice each day,

Let your tongue and lips find the way.

For in every word, there’s rhythm and grace,

Pronunciation helps you keep pace.

Behind the scenes reflection

While writing this post, I paid attention to the importance of pronunciation in my classroom lessons. During my college days, I have had discussions about it with my peers after finishing our block teaching sessions. These days we listen to native speakers' speeches and songs to improve our pronunciation. Those days we had two lecturers from England, who worked on the British council named Ms. Hillary and Ms. Anne. They helped us to improve our pronunciation, and we listened to them actively as they are native speakers of the English language. So I wanted to write an article about the importance of pronunciation in English as a second language classroom. Furthermore, pronunciation is essential in a second language acquisition as it is not their native language, they have to pay attention to it, and it is the concrete cement which joins all the four skills collaboratively. I reflected on my own experiences as a teacher and did some online reading to support my topic. The hand drawn chart helped me to organize my ideas effectively.

  1. Teaching English through songs and rhymes.

Songs and rhymes are one of the most enjoyable and effective methods, especially for young learners. Songs help to make the learning environment fun, relaxed, and engaging. Students are actively participating in singing and doing actions related to it.
Rhymes help children to develop their pronunciation, rhythm, and intonation naturally. Repetition in songs helps them to reinforce vocabulary and sentence structures without the need for memorization. For example, using simple action songs like “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” teaches body parts and verbs. Songs like Old Macdonald had a farm teach about colours and animals. Rhymes like “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” improve listening and speaking skills. Songs also help learners to gain confidence in using the language well. Some students may not be confident enough to speak in front of the classroom, but they may enjoy singing with other students. In my classroom, I use audio, videos, and even live singing to make lessons interactive. I use a Bluetooth speaker to play the songs. This method not only supports language learning but also builds a joyful connection with English. When you learn a new language, there are lots of unusual sounds your mouth isn’t used to making. Singing helps our mouths to form the right shapes and make these sounds loudly and clearly. Singing also helps our children to learn how stronger and weaker sounds are pronounced differently in English.

Singing along to phonics songs is a good way to practise the different sounds of the English language for 5 - 12-year-old children. It helps the students to learn new words. Furthermore, it helps the teacher to teach key vocabulary in an interesting way, as singing is something which most people prefer. For example, look at this song which teaches the short and long vowel "o" sound. Pop, pop, popcorn

Popping in the pot, pop, pop, popcorn, eat it while hot, pop, pop, popcorn, butter on top. When I eat popcorn, I can't stop. By Helen Moore. There are many examples like this. This is used by grade five students. Rather than just teaching the words, this method is very effective, and I have experienced that during my lessons. I feel that they are enthusiastic to sing, and they grasp the knowledge very quickly.

As an English teacher, I’ve seen how songs and rhymes can transform a classroom into an interactive and engaging classroom. My friends, as school teachers who are currently working in the same school when we are free, have discussed how songs and rhymes help in English language teaching. When I first introduced rhymes to my students, especially those in early grades, their faces lit up with excitement. Even shy learners began to participate confidently. Over time, I noticed their improvement in pronunciation, vocabulary usage, and listening skills. Songs create a low-stress environment where children are not afraid to make mistakes. They remember words better and use them naturally in speaking. It also helps to build a routine, starting the day with a song that sets a positive tone. I’ve realised that teaching English isn’t just about grammar and textbooks; it’s about creating joyful experiences. Therefore, songs and rhymes have become an essential tool in my English lessons.
